What is a chat room about?

What exactly is a chat room?

A chat room is a place online where you can connect to other people in order to 'chat'. This can be done through various means for instance text, webcam, or voice audio. Webcam chat rooms have become quite popular due to the personal experience it gives the user. Webcam chat rooms are very popular but certainly not as popular as good old text-based chat. This allows a person to literally relax in the comfort of their own home, or wherever they might be, and talk to other people one to one in a private capacity or in what is termed 'group chat' where there can be any number of people in the room.

Chat sites have been about for about the same length of time as the internet. Although chat rooms have evolved quite considerably, they are in principle still the same. Familiar words in a chat room might be 'ASL' or 'LOL' which most people are completely familiar with and both started in internet chat rooms.

Most sites cater for age groups and then some simply allow all in without any form of moderation. The unmoderated sites can be very expletive and generally full of spam and people trying to flood the chat wall. A number of good sites can still be found on the internet which you usually find are moderated to a degree.
